What Does Each AC Noise Mean?

Banging or Clanking

Most likely cause: A loose or broken part inside your compressor, or a loose fan blade hitting the housing. Shut the system off immediately and call Prime Air — running it can cause catastrophic compressor damage.

Screeching or Squealing

Most likely cause: A failing fan motor or worn motor bearings. A screeching blower motor usually needs replacement. Caught early, it’s a $300–$700 repair. Ignored, the motor seizes and can damage other components.

Clicking When Starting or Stopping

Normal: One or two clicks when the system starts or shuts off is normal — that’s the relay engaging. Abnormal: Continuous clicking during operation usually indicates a failing relay or electrical control problem.

Humming but Not Starting

Most likely cause: Failed capacitor. The system is trying to start but can’t because the capacitor isn’t providing the startup boost. Very common in South Florida’s heat. Inexpensive fix ($150–$300) when caught early.

Hissing or Bubbling

Most likely cause: Refrigerant leak. Hissing is refrigerant escaping under pressure; bubbling is refrigerant moving through the lines with air bubbles (indicating a leak that’s drawn in air). This requires a licensed technician — refrigerant handling is regulated.

Rattling

Most likely cause: Loose panels, debris in the outdoor unit (leaves, twigs), or loose screws. Check the outdoor unit for debris first. If the rattle continues after clearing debris, call Prime Air.

Gurgling

Most likely cause: Clogged drain line. In South Florida’s humidity, this is extremely common. Water is backing up through the drain line and gurgling as it overflows. Same-day drain line service available.
