What to Do Right Now If Your AC Is Frozen

  1. Turn the AC off immediately — switch it to FAN ONLY mode or turn it off completely. Running a frozen AC damages the compressor.
  2. Let it thaw — 2–4 hours with the system off and fan running. Put towels around the air handler to catch dripping water.
  3. Do NOT pour hot water on the unit — let it thaw naturally.
  4. Call Prime Air — (561) 855-0659. Once thawed, we’ll diagnose and fix the root cause so it doesn’t happen again.

Why Is My AC Freezing Up?

Low Refrigerant — Most Common Cause ($200–$1,500)

When refrigerant is low, the pressure in the evaporator coil drops too far and the moisture in the air freezes on the coil. Low refrigerant always means a leak — adding refrigerant without finding and fixing the leak is a temporary fix that will fail again. Prime Air locates and repairs the leak before recharging.

Dirty Air Filter — Restricted Airflow ($0–$30)

The most preventable cause of AC freeze-ups. When a clogged filter restricts airflow over the evaporator coil, the coil gets too cold and freezes. Check your filter first — if it’s gray and matted, replace it. This may be all you need.

Dirty Evaporator Coil ($150–$500)

A coil coated in dust and debris can’t transfer heat properly. The coil temperature drops below freezing and ice forms. Part of Prime Air’s maintenance tune-up — one reason maintenance customers almost never have freeze-ups.

Blocked Vents or Closed Registers ($0)

Too many closed vents in your home reduces airflow through the system. Check that all registers are open and not blocked by furniture. If this doesn’t resolve the freeze, call us.

Blower Motor Failure ($300–$700)

If the blower motor isn’t moving enough air across the evaporator coil, ice forms. You may hear the system running but notice little airflow from your vents. This is a mechanical failure that needs same-day attention.
